I started my Instagram for MJ Creative Co in November of 2017, and I immediately fell in love with the lettering community. Although there will always be those that aren’t good members of a community, the majority of the people who letter on Instagram are wonderful. There were many people who helped me by answer questions, inspiring me, and reaching out. Because of this, I have continued to have the mindset of community over competition.
Enter: Bossy Brushstrokes (check out more about her here). Our relationship started after I responded to one of her stories asking for help with her website. I had just finished with my website, so I had some good tidbits to share. We bonded immediately over the struggle of websites, blogging, & business in general. Eventually, we found out that we both are basically obsessed with the community & sharing as much support as we can – and as our friendship grew, the idea of Lady Boss Lettering was born. We knew we wanted to do a lettering challenge together, and one of our first thoughts was to do one about being a girl boss. But it wasn’t enough – we wanted to do more to help the community and bring people together. How we became friends, and our immediate support of each other’s businesses, is a mindset we wanted to bring to a group of whoever felt the same.
Turns out – there are a lot of other people who feel exactly the same way we do.
When we announced our March challenge, we also launched our Lady Boss Lettering Facebook group. After struggling to find a group where we had complete freedom in terms of questions, support, and promotion, we decided to create a place where there were barely any rules or stipulations, and where lady bosses can get together and talk lettering.
In less than one month, we have grown to over 100 people in our Facebook group, and over 600 posts using the hashtag #ladybosslettering. Even halfway through March, it was obvious to us that a lot of people were enjoying the lettering prompts and the support that came with it – so it was a no brainer for us to continue Lady Boss Lettering past just March. We have so many more ideas for future challenges and other ways to get involved in the lettering community, and we hope to continue for as long as we can.
Our April challenge was just announced, and we’re calling it “For Good Measure.” Basically, it’s all about challenging your lettering skills with two of the hardest things to letter: one word and long phrases. One word challenge prompts are difficult, because with one word, there is almost a need for something more so the single word isn’t too boring (at least, that’s what I think). With long phrases, the difficulty lies within the composition of the long quote. It’s something that can be really difficult for letterers, including myself. If you participate, use the hashtag #LBLforgoodmeasure!
Now that it’s almost April, we’re expanding the use of the hashtag #ladybosslettering to any lettering pieces that go along with what LBL stands for, not just for the challenge. The goal is for it to be for anyone who letters relating to anything about business, being a woman, being a boss of her own life, etc.
