TREND: CALLIGRAPHY
Obviously, the reason I’ve jumped on the custom invitation and calligraphy bandwagon is from the sheer number of brides who like and have used the classic and beautiful look of calligraphy in their wedding invitations. Whether it is classic and simple calligraphy, directly from a nib and ink or a more modern interpretation done with brush pens or digitally, any style of custom calligraphy especially can create a more unique and beautiful end product.
TREND: WATERCOLOR
Both in and out of the wedding invitation business, watercolor is an extremely popular style used to create a more artistic piece. Especially in wedding invitations, this is a much newer style, as brides are starting to think outside the box to plan an extremely unique wedding invitation to represent the big day. Watercolor has always been a very beautiful, but sometimes casual, medium to work with, and for those couples who want their invitations to invoke a more breezy feeling, watercolor does just that.
TREND: LETTERPRESS
Letterpress invitations are, truthfully, my absolute favorite look when it comes to invitations. They have a classic essence that is incredibly beautiful. But this is also one of the most expensive ways to print your invitations. The process of real letterpress, which is having a custom metal plate made, is tedious and an added cost that many brides don’t see the point in. But if you want to have an invitation that is simple and beautiful, and makes your guests swoon, I believe letterpress is worth the added investment. It also gives the invitation a nice texture, rather than regular printed invites which are completely flat.
TREND: ENVELOPE LINERS
Many brides want an added “pop” to their invitation package without compromising the simplicity of their physical invitation, and that’s where the popularity of envelope liners come in. Buying envelopes with liners already in them can be really expensive, but if you’re looking for something additional for not too much more expensive, make the liners yourself! It’s not too difficult, and then you have the option of any paper you want. It can give your suite a little pop of color or a special pattern, especially as it is the first sense of your personality that your guests will see.
TREND: DETAILED MAPS
Although we know that {almost} everyone has Google Maps, a homemade map is sometimes a nice addition to your wedding suite. In the past, maps were used literally to guide people to your wedding, but now they can give people a little glimpse into either how far your ceremony and reception are from each other or just where in the city your wedding is taking place. I’ve seen so many beautiful hand drawn or custom digital maps that truly make an amazing element to an invitation.
TREND: GREENERY
Not only is the idea of greenery a very popular addition to the wedding’s entire theme, but it’s also a great look for the invitation itself. Greenery is easy to match to elements of your actual wedding, unlike flower elements in invitations, which will most likely be different than the actual flowers you use the day of your wedding. Adding greenery to an invitation is also a more muted version of using flowers, and allows you to be more playful with the rest of your invitations because the greenery doesn’t take too much attention from the rest of it.
TREND: FOIL
Just like letterpress, foil is another way to add another dimension and a sense of luxury into your invitations. Many brides choose a metal to incorporate into their them; silver, gold, or rose gold typically. Adding that metal to the invitation is just another way to bring your wedding theme into the invitation. Foil is also an added expense, but brides love incorporating a little shine to their invitations.
TREND: MINIMALISM
When you look at classic wedding invitations, they all look kind of similar, right? The one thing they have in common is that they rarely have any images on them, just text. This style is still around today, but in a more modern way. There are ways to make a minimalist invitation, but still have it be unique to the individual couple. Minimalist invitations rarely have any images or much color, and is typically black and white, though sometimes one color is used. This minimalism is often combined with letterpress to give it texture, even though the actual content is very basic.
TREND: LASER CUT
Laser cut is one of the most recent addition to the list of wedding invitation trends that have been showing up fairly often in the wedding universe. This can mean laser cut outs of the actual invitation or a way of binding or bringing an invitation together. More and more businesses are investing in the equipment that can laser cut paper, which means it is more easily accessible. In addition to businesses, because of the rising popularity of Cricut or Silhouette machines, many people are able to create laser cut invitations directly from their home. This gives the invitation a unique added dimension.
TREND: CLEAR VELLUM & ACRYLIC
Another recent trend is printing invitations on clear vellum paper or transparent acrylic. Vellum especially isn’t too much more expensive, and allows for a separate or attached background paper with a busier pattern, so it shows up muted behind the information. These techniques are especially unique and are not used quite as often as other trends on this list, which can be especially attractive to brides who want to be different.
